Who we are and what we do

Who are we

NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is the main planner and commissioner of health services in Portsmouth.

We have a budget of around £260m and spend around £30,000 every hour of every day on health services as we seek to show that we can make a difference in improving the health of our patients.

There are 24 GP practices in the Portsmouth area and each is a member of the CCG – between them they look after around 215,000 registered patients.

As a CCG we are expected to work with our member GPs, healthcare professionals, patients and a wide range of local organisations to design effective and high quality health services for people in Portsmouth.

Our commissioning responsibilities cover services including (but not limited to):

  • Elective hospital care
  • Rehabilitation care
  • Urgent and emergency care
  • Most community health services
  • Mental health & learning disabilities

We now have delegated responsibility (from NHS England) for commissioning primary care services. We are not responsible for specialist health services, or public health services but it is very important that we work very closely with those who do provide these services.
