Local GP urges people to take extra care as the cold weather sets in
28 February 2018

As severe winter weather conditions start to hit the South East of England this week, a local GP is advising people to wrap up warm and take extra care.

Cold weather can affect your health and the Met Office has issued an Amber Warning for the local area this week. This means there is the potential for heavy snow and ice with temperatures dropping to around zero.

Dr Elizabeth Fellows, the Urgent Care GP Lead for Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport and South Eastern Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Groups said: “Although we may not get the worst of the weather, it is important to know what you can do if cold weather hits.

“If you must go outside, wrap up warm in lots of thin layers to conserve heat and wear shoes with extra grip. If you have one, keep a charged mobile phone with you in case of an emergency.

“If you have an elderly relative or neighbour, a quick phone call or visit can make the world of difference. They may struggle to get around in this weather so check they are warm enough and have plenty of hot meals.”

Top tips:

  • Look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to the cold and ensure they have access to warm food and drinks and are managing to heat their homes adequately
  • Try to maintain indoor temperatures to at least 18C, particularly if you are not mobile, have long term illness or are 65 or over
  • Stay tuned for weather forecasts, ensure you are stocked with food and medications in advance, have deliveries or ask a friend to help
  • Take weather into account when planning your activity over the following days
  • If eligible seek entitlements and benefits such as Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments, which are available to some
  • If you meet the criteria register for priority service with your energy and water suppliers
  • Avoid exposing yourself to cold or icy outdoor conditions if you are at a higher risk of cold related illness or falls
  • Discuss with friends and neighbours about clearing snow and ice from in front of your house and public walkways nearby
