Your GP should be your first port of call for any non-emergency problems which could be physical, psychological or a combination of both. GP practices offer appointments with a doctor or nurse for assessments, advice and treatment, especially for minor illnesses or injuries.

Make sure you are registered with a GP practice and know how to get an appointment or repeat prescription. Your practice will have access to all your background notes and medical history.

Your GP surgery provides a wide range of family health services, including:

  • Advice on health problems
  • Vaccinations
  • Examinations and treatment
  • Prescriptions for medicines
  • Referrals to other health services and social services

What should I do when my surgery is closed?

Call 111 and they will listen to your concerns and put you in touch with the GP out-of-hours service if you need it. You will then receive a call-back from a GP who will talk to you and decide with you whether you need:

  • advice and guidance on how to deal with your symptoms at home
  • a face-to-face appointment to attend a primary care centre to see a doctor
  • a home visit from one of our doctors
