Staying Healthy

Staying Healthy

It is essential that the NHS not only treats people when they are ill – but also helps them to stay healthy and avoid becoming ill in the first place.

We all know that smoking, a poor diet, being overweight or obese and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, are damaging to our health, and in Portsmouth we face particular challenges. For example, city residents are less physically active than the national average, and 52% of adults in Portsmouth are classed as ‘obese’. In addition, levels of smoking and binge-drinking are above the UK average.

Supporting people to adopt a healthier lifestyle can help to reduce the number of people developing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and respiratory conditions.

We want to improve people’s health in the city. You can find out more about how the NHS, along with its partners, is seeking to make Portsmouth healthier here.
