GP practice merger set for this June
13 March 2018

The planned merger of two GP practices in Portsmouth will take place this summer.

The Trafalgar Medical Group Practice and The Eastney Practice will officially join contracts on April 1 – part of the process which will now lead to their formal merger on June 27.

When news of the merger was announced last autumn, it was initially thought that the full merger would go ahead in April.

Dr Jon Price, of the Trafalgar Medical Group Practice, said: “These things take time to sort. There’s a great deal of work to be done to prepare for something like this and there’s no delay of any kind really – to all intents and purposes we will ‘become one’ in April.

“The date doesn’t really affect our patients. What will, we hope, be more important to them is that this merger will lead to further improvements in our services to them, and it will greatly help the resilience of us as a combined practice, dedicated to give our patients the best care that we can.”

Both Eastney Practice and the Trafalgar Medical Group have staff at Eastney Health Centre, although Trafalgar also has its main building in Osborne Road, Southsea. Trafalgar currently has 18,055 registered patients and Eastney 5,305, giving it a total of around 23,500 patients when merged.

Dr Annie Eggins, of Eastney Practice, said: “Combining our practices will give us at least twelve GPs, eight practice nurses and several healthcare assistants to provide a greater choice and more clinical skills to our patients than either practice can currently offer on its own.

“All our non-clinical staff will obviously come together too to give us a very experienced, skilled and highly-competent backroom team.”
